How it Works

  • This PV charge creates an electrical current (specifically, direct current or DC), which is captured by the cabling in the solar panels.

Understanding Solar Panels

There are three types of solar panels mainly available nowadays: monocrystalline, polycrystalline (also known as multi-crystalline), and thin-film. These solar panels range in appearance, performance, cost, and how they are manufactured. Depending on the type of photovoltaic (PV) installation, you are considering, one option may be more appropriate than the others. 

Also known as the single crystal panels. They are made from pure silicon crystal which is sliced into several wafer forming cells. These wafers are cut into an octagonal wafer so they get their unique look and uniform color. They can be easily identified by their black or dark blue color, because they are manufactured from pure silicon.

The polycrystalline solar panels are composed of multiple silicon crystals. They are made of silicon fragments that are fused and cast into square molds. When these crystals are cooled down, they are cut into thin slices and assembled into a polycrystalline solar panel. They are also known as “multi-crystalline” panels.

Thin-film solar panels are manufactured using photovoltaic substances, including amorphous silicon (a-Si), gallium selenide (CIGS) and cadmium telluride (CdTe). These substances are deposited on a solid surface like glass, metal or plastic, making them lighter and easier to install.

PERC solar panels are manufactured using cutting-edge technology. It is made through the addition of a layer on the back of the solar cells. Traditional solar panels only absorb sunlight to a certain extent and a certain amount of sunlight passes right through them. The extra layer in the PERC panels allows unabsorbed sunlight to be absorbed back into the back of the panels, making it even more effective.
